Jiuzhaigou vs Zhangjiajie vs Yangshuo: Where to Visit in China?

Jiuzhaigou, Zhangjiajie, and Yangshuo are among China's most spectacular natural destinations, but they offer completely different experiences. This guide compares their landscapes, accessibility, seasons, hiking, photography, and travel styles to help you decide which destination best matches your trip.

When travelers dream about China’s natural beauty, three destinations appear on almost every bucket list: Jiuzhaigou, Zhangjiajie, and Yangshuo. Each showcases a completely different side of China’s spectacular landscapes.

The challenge isn’t deciding whether they’re worth visiting—they all are. The real question is which one is the best fit for your trip.

If you’re visiting China for the first time, it’s rarely practical to include all three in a single itinerary, especially if you have less than two weeks. That means you’ll need to choose carefully.

We’ve helped travelers plan trips across all three regions for years, and one thing is clear: there isn’t a universal “best” destination. The right choice depends on what you want to experience.

In this guide, we’ll compare Jiuzhaigou, Zhangjiajie, and Yangshuo from a traveler’s perspective, not just which is more beautiful, but which is easier to visit, when to go, who each destination is best suited for, and how to fit it into your China itinerary.

Which Landscape Is Right for You?

People often ask us, “Which one is more beautiful?”

The honest answer is that it’s almost impossible to compare them directly because they showcase three completely different landscapes. Rather than asking which is objectively prettier, it’s more helpful to ask which type of scenery excites you the most.

Jiuzhaigou: China’s Most Colorful National Park

Jiuzhaigou feels almost unreal the first time you visit.

Instead of dramatic peaks dominating the view, the landscape is built around crystal-clear lakes, cascading waterfalls, forests, and broad valleys. On sunny days, the water shifts between turquoise, emerald, sapphire blue, and even golden green, depending on the depth, minerals, and light.

Many visitors expect to spend most of their time hiking. In reality, Jiuzhaigou is surprisingly accessible. A network of eco-buses carries visitors deep into the park, while wooden boardwalks connect the major lakes and waterfalls.

One thing many first-time visitors underestimate is the park’s size. Jiuzhaigou follows a Y-shaped valley system stretching for dozens of kilometers. Even with shuttle buses, a full day usually involves 15–20 km of walking. Fortunately, most of the route is gently downhill, making it manageable for families and senior travelers.

Jiuzhaigou transforms by season. Spring brings fresh greenery and rushing waterfalls fed by melting snow. Summer offers vibrant forests and comfortable temperatures. Autumn, however, is when Jiuzhaigou becomes truly extraordinary, as golden, red, and orange forests reflect across brilliantly colored lakes. Winter is quieter, with snow-covered landscapes creating an entirely different atmosphere.

If your ideal day is walking beside peaceful lakes, stopping frequently for photographs, and enjoying nature at a relaxed pace, Jiuzhaigou is difficult to beat.

Zhangjiajie: A Landscape Unlike Anywhere Else

If Jiuzhaigou is defined by water, Zhangjiajie is defined by height.

Thousands of narrow sandstone pillars rise almost vertically from the valleys below, creating one of the most distinctive landscapes in the world. It’s no surprise these mountains inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the film Avatar, although the real scenery feels even more impressive in person when morning mist drifts through the valleys.

Although sightseeing inside the park is much easier with cable cars, elevators, mountain buses, and scenic trails, Zhangjiajie still involves more physical effort than Jiuzhaigou. Walking between viewpoints often means climbing stairs. Visitors who enjoy active sightseeing generally find this part of the experience rewarding, while those looking for a leisurely day may find it more tiring.

Many international travelers visit Zhangjiajie for the famous Avatar Mountains in Yuanjiajie. However, areas like Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie feature equally dramatic scenery. Nearby, Tianmen Mountain offers another unforgettable experience with its towering cliffs, glass skywalk, and famous natural arch.

If dramatic mountain landscapes leave you speechless, Zhangjiajie delivers some of the most unforgettable views in China.

Yangshuo: Scenic Countryside at a Slower Pace

Yangshuo offers something completely different.

Rather than concentrating spectacular scenery inside a national park, Yangshuo spreads its beauty across rivers, villages, farmland, and limestone hills. It’s a place where the journey often matters just as much as the destination.

Many visitors spend their days cycling quiet country roads, drifting along the Yulong River on bamboo rafts, or simply stopping whenever a beautiful view catches their eye. There are famous attractions such as Moon Hill and the Li River, but much of Yangshuo’s charm comes from slowing down and exploring beyond the main tourist spots.

This slower rhythm also makes Yangshuo one of the easiest destinations in China to enjoy without a packed sightseeing schedule.

For travelers who enjoy photography, Yangshuo rewards patience rather than dramatic viewpoints. Sunrise over the Li River, morning mist among the karst hills, and golden light across the rice fields create some of southern China’s most memorable scenes.

Which Is Easier to Visit?

When comparing Jiuzhaigou, Zhangjiajie, and Yangshuo, scenery is only part of the decision. Transportation can make a big difference, especially for international travelers visiting China for the first time.

All three destinations are accessible, but they require different levels of planning.

Jiuzhaigou: The Most Remote, But Much Easier Than Before

Jiuzhaigou used to be one of China’s more difficult destinations to reach, often requiring a long 8–10 hour drive from Chengdu. Today, with the opening of the Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station, the transportation has improved significantly.

The most common options are:

The main challenge is that Jiuzhaigou is not a city destination. Even after arriving at the nearest transport hub, you still need another transfer to reach the national park.

Recommended time: 3 days from Chengdu (including transportation).

Zhangjiajie: Good Transport, But More Connections

Zhangjiajie is relatively easy to reach because it has its own airport and railway connections. However, as the scenic areas are spread out, planning your route matters.

Common options include:

  • High-speed train: Direct trains connect Zhangjiajie with major cities such as Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and other destinations. From Chengdu, the journey takes around 4-5.5 hours.
  • Flight: Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport has flights from several major Chinese cities and direct flights from abroad.
  • Private transfer: A private car is useful if combining Zhangjiajie with nearby destinations such as Fenghuang Ancient Town.

One thing first-time visitors often underestimate is the distance between Zhangjiajie’s main attractions. The national forest park, Tianmen Mountain, and the Grand Canyon area are separate attractions, so staying in the right location is important.

Recommended time: 3–4 days depending on whether you include nearby attractions.

Yangshuo: The Easiest for Most International Travelers

Among the three destinations, Yangshuo is usually the simplest to include in a China itinerary because it connects well with major cities in southern China.

Most travelers arrive through Guilin:

  • High-speed train: Guilin has excellent connections with Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and many major cities. From Guilin, Yangshuo is around 40 minutes by high-speed train or about 1–1.5 hours by private transfer.
  • Flight: Guilin Liangjiang Airport connects with major Chinese cities, followed by a transfer to Yangshuo.
  • Private transfer: A private car makes it easy to explore the Li River, Yulong River, and countryside areas at your own pace.

Unlike Jiuzhaigou and Zhangjiajie, Yangshuo itself is a small town where many attractions are easily accessible without complicated park transportation.

Recommended time: 2–4 days, often combined with Guilin, Guangzhou, or Hong Kong.

Can You Visit More Than One?

Of course, yes.

If you can’t decide between Jiuzhaigou, Zhangjiajie, and Yangshuo, combining two of them can be much easier.

That said, as they are located in different parts of China, the travel time between them is an important factor to consider when planning.

Here are the combinations we usually recommend to our guests.

Jiuzhaigou + Zhangjiajie

Recommended time: 7–10 days

A combined Jiuzhaigou Zhangjiajie tour is the best option for travelers who want China’s most dramatic natural scenery.

Jiuzhaigou offers colorful alpine lakes, waterfalls, and forests, while Zhangjiajie features towering sandstone peaks and dramatic mountain views. The two destinations feel completely different, making them a great contrast.

The main challenge is that there is no direct connection between the two destinations. Adding Chengdu as a transit point is often the most practical option.

Best for: Photographers, nature lovers, and travelers who want unforgettable landscapes.

10-Day Chengdu Jiuzhaigou Zhangjiajie Scenic Tour Package

14-Day Chengdu Chongqing Zhangjiajie Jiuzhaigou with Yangtze Cruise

Zhangjiajie + Yangshuo

Recommended time: 6–8 days

This is usually another of the easiest combinations because both are located in central/southern China and have relatively convenient transportation connections.

Many travelers combine them with Guilin or Fenghuang Ancient Town to create a well-rounded itinerary.

Best for: First-time visitors who want iconic scenery without too complicated logistics.

14-Day China Family Tour: Beijing, Xi'an, Zhangjiajie, Guilin & Shanghai

Jiuzhaigou + Yangshuo

Recommended time: 7–10 days

This combination is ideal for travelers who love beautiful water landscapes but want two completely different experiences.

Jiuzhaigou is famous for its high-altitude alpine lakes, colorful pools, and waterfalls surrounded by snow-capped mountains and forests. Yangshuo, on the other hand, is known for its winding rivers, limestone peaks, bamboo rafts, and peaceful countryside scenery.

Since there is no direct transportation between the two destinations, travel via Chengdu or Chongqing is practical via flight or high-speed train connection toward Guilin.

Best for: Travelers who love nature, photography, and a mix of dramatic scenery and slow-paced countryside experiences.

Yangshuo cycling

Can You Visit All Three in One Trip?

Technically, yes.

However, we usually don’t recommend it unless you have at least 12–14 days and are comfortable with a fast-paced itinerary.

The challenge is not the distance alone. These destinations are located in three different regions:

  • Jiuzhaigou → Sichuan (southwest China)
  • Zhangjiajie → Hunan (central China)
  • Yangshuo → Guangxi (southern China)

Moving between them often requires a combination of trains, flights, and transfers. You could easily lose several days just changing locations.

For most travelers, it is better to choose one or two destinations and spend more time enjoying the experience. A slower itinerary with fewer destinations usually creates better memories than trying to check off every famous landscape in one trip.

Jiuzhaigou allows visitors to enjoy spectacular scenery without demanding hikes, while Yangshuo offers a slower pace with easy sightseeing options. Zhangjiajie is possible but requires more walking and stairs.
