Huanglong Scenic Area

China’s alpine travertine wonderland.

Overview

Huanglong Scenic Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site treasured for its extraordinary travertine formations – multicolored limestone pools that cascade down the mountainside in striking blues, greens, yellows, and whites. Combined with snow-capped peaks, waterfalls, dense forests, and high-altitude wetlands, Huanglong offers some of China’s most photogenic natural scenery.

Why Visit

Huanglong is a destination for nature lovers and photographers alike. Its Five-Color Pond system cascades across mountain slopes, reflecting vibrant hues under the sun. Autumn transforms the forests into a golden tapestry, while the highland setting and serene atmosphere offer an unforgettable alpine experience.

Plus, the area’s biodiversity — including rare animals like the giant panda and golden snub-nosed monkey — makes it a compelling escape into China’s wild landscapes.

Is the hike difficult?

The boardwalks are well maintained but the high altitude can make the walk feel strenuous — go slowly and stay hydrated.
