Day 2:
Beijing | Tian'anmen Square → Forbidden City → Hutong Courtyard

The Experience:

Today, we begin with the historic heart of Beijing.

After breakfast, we drive to Tian’anmen Square, one of the world’s largest public squares and the symbolic center of modern China.

Then, we will continue into the Forbidden City. For nearly 500 years, the Forbidden City served as the home of China’s emperors.

As we walk through its grand gates, courtyards, and palace halls, you’ll discover stories of imperial ceremonies, court politics, and daily life behind the palace walls. The Palace is impressive with details: carved roof decorations, hidden side courtyards, and ancient symbolism, etc. All these make the experience memorable.

Late in the afternoon, we will enter Beijing’s traditional hutong neighborhoods.

Narrow lanes, courtyard homes, and local shops reveal a much more personal side of the city. Walking through these streets offers a glimpse into a way of life that has survived for generations despite Beijing’s rapid development.

Highlights

  • Walk through historic Tian’anmen Square
  • Explore the vast Forbidden City complex
  • Discover stories of China’s imperial dynasties
  • Experience local life in a traditional hutong
  • See the contrast between ancient and modern Beijing

Day 3:
Beijing | Great Wall (Mutianyu Section)

The Experience:

This morning, we leave the city and drive about 1.5 hours to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall.

Mutianyu is one of the most scenic and family-friendly parts of the Wall, offering excellent views without the extreme crowds found at some other sections.

To make the visit more comfortable, we take the cable car up the mountain. Then, we can explore the Wall on foot.

The Great Wall is not a single structure but a vast defensive system built and rebuilt over many centuries. As we walk between watchtowers, you’ll gain a better understanding of the engineering, military strategy, and human effort behind one of the world’s most famous landmarks.

In the afternoon, we will return to downtown Beijing.

The evening is free for rest or perhaps trying Beijing specialties such as Peking duck with your family. If energy allows, you can visit the National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) and the National Aquatics Centre (Water Cube). Both are beautifully lit at night.

Highlights

  • Visit the beautiful Mutianyu section of the Great Wall
  • Ride a cable car for panoramic mountain views
  • Learn about the Wall’s military and cultural significance

Tips

Upon arrival, we head to your hotel and check in.

Depending on the arrival time and your energy, you can have a rest for the rest of the day, or explore the Ancient City Wall, one of Xi’an’s most iconic landmarks.

Built during the Ming Dynasty, the wall remains one of the best-preserved city fortifications in China. Walking or cycling along the top offers excellent views of both the historic center and the rapidly growing modern city beyond.

Xi’an was once the starting point of the Silk Road, and the city still carries a unique blend of Chinese and Central Asian influences.

Day 5:
Xi'an | Terracotta Warriors → Muslim Quarter

The Experience:

This morning we drive to the Terracotta Warriors, one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Buried for over 2,000 years alongside China’s first emperor, thousands of life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots were created to guard him in the afterlife.

As we explore the excavation halls, you’ll notice that no two warriors have identical facial features. Beyond their scale, the site offers fascinating insights into the power, ambition, and engineering achievements of early imperial China.

Later, we return to the city and wander through the lively Muslim Quarter. This historic neighborhood reflects centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Road.

The streets are filled with local snacks, traditional architecture, and a vibrant atmosphere unlike anywhere else in China.

Highlights

  • Visit the world-famous Terracotta Warriors
  • Learn about China’s first emperor
  • Explore Xi’an’s multicultural heritage

After the visit, we will transfer to the airport for our flight to Zhangjiajie.

This region is home to some of China’s most extraordinary landscapes and will feel completely different from the historical cities you’ve visited so far.

After checking into your hotel, the evening is free to relax and prepare for the mountain adventures ahead.

The Experience:

After breakfast, we enter Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and take a combination of park shuttle buses and cable cars into the heart of the mountains.

Our first stop is Tianzi Mountain, famous for its sweeping viewpoints over thousands of sandstone pillars rising from the valleys below. On misty days, the peaks seem to float among the clouds, creating one of China’s most iconic landscapes.

From Tianzi Mountain, we continue to Yuanjiajie, walking along scenic cliffside paths and viewing platforms. This area became internationally famous after inspiring the floating mountains in the movie Avatar, but its real history stretches back millions of years.

As we explore, we will explain how wind, water, and geological forces shaped these extraordinary formations. Throughout the day, we move at a comfortable pace, allowing plenty of time for photography and enjoying the scenery before returning to our hotel.

The experience begins with a ride on one of the world’s longest cable cars, carrying us high above forests, villages, and winding mountain roads. As we climb, the views become increasingly spectacular.

At the summit, we follow mountain trails built directly along the cliffs. One of the highlights is the famous Glass Skywalk, where transparent panels allow you to look straight down into the valley below. For those who prefer, there are alternative routes beside the glass sections.

We also visit Tianmen Cave, often called Heaven’s Gate, a massive natural opening in the mountain that has inspired legends and attracted pilgrims for centuries.

The combination of stunning scenery, unique engineering, and local folklore makes this one of the most memorable days of the entire journey.

  • Ride the famous Tianmen Mountain cable car
  • Walk the thrilling Glass Skywalk
  • Visit the legendary Heaven’s Gate cave

Upon arrival in Guilin, we settle into our hotel and begin exploring a city long celebrated for its scenery.

For centuries, Chinese poets and artists have praised Guilin’s unusual karst mountains and winding rivers. Unlike the dramatic vertical pillars of Zhangjiajie, Guilin’s landscape feels softer and more peaceful.

The drive takes us through villages and valleys before we arrive at Ping’an Zhuang Village, home to generations of terrace farmers.

We spend the day walking through the village and exploring viewpoints overlooking the terraces.

These remarkable fields were carved into the mountainsides over hundreds of years and continue to be farmed today.

Beyond the scenery, this visit offers a chance to learn about the traditions of the Zhuang minority people, whose wooden homes and agricultural lifestyle remain closely connected to the landscape.

Along the river, limestone peaks rise dramatically from the water while fishermen, bamboo groves, and small villages create scenes that have inspired Chinese paintings for centuries.

After arriving in Yangshuo, we continue into the countryside around the Yulong River.

Depending on your preference, we can explore by bicycle or electric scooter along quiet village roads.

You’ll experience the remarkable diversity of China from peaceful rivers and mountain villages to one of the world’s most dynamic cities.

Upon arrival, we transfer to our hotel and begin discovering Shanghai’s modern character.

Unlike Beijing and Xi’an, which showcase imperial history, Shanghai reflects China’s international connections and rapid development. Skyscrapers, historic architecture, and bustling streets create a unique atmosphere where East and West have influenced each other for more than a century.

The remainder of the day is flexible. Many travelers enjoy an evening walk along the Bund, where Shanghai’s skyline becomes especially impressive after dark.

5/5

Our guides were knowledgeable without giving us too much information at once, and they were happy to answer questions about local life. The driver in Guilin even suggested a small local restaurant we would never have found on our own. The scenery was amazing, but the people we met made the trip especially memorable.
