Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain
A legendary mountain of sky-high roads, cliff walks, and Heaven’s Gate.
Overview
Tianmen Mountain is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Zhangjiajie, famous for its dramatic cliffs, thrilling mountain roads, and the iconic Heaven’s Gate rock arch.
Located just south of Zhangjiajie City, the mountain rises steeply above the surrounding landscape and offers some of the most dramatic scenery in the region. Visitors reach the summit by riding the Tianmen Mountain Cableway, one of the longest cable cars in the world, stretching more than 7 kilometers from the city center to the mountain top.
At the heart of the mountain is Tianmen Cave, also known as Heaven’s Gate — a massive natural arch carved through the cliff. A staircase of 999 steps climbs up to the opening, creating one of the most iconic sights in Chinese mountain landscapes.
Beyond the cave, visitors can explore cliffside paths, glass skywalks, and forest trails that circle the summit of the mountain.
Why Visit
Tianmen Mountain offers one of the most dramatic travel experiences in Zhangjiajie.
The journey itself is unforgettable. The cable car slowly rises from the city floor into the clouds, revealing forests, cliffs, and winding mountain roads below. One of the most famous roads in China — the 99-Bend Mountain Road — snakes its way up the cliffside toward Heaven’s Gate.
Standing beneath the massive arch of Tianmen Cave feels almost surreal. The enormous opening in the mountain looks like a gateway carved into the sky.
For adventurous travelers, the glass skywalks along the cliff edge add an extra thrill, allowing visitors to walk on transparent platforms high above the valley.
Tianmen Mountain combines natural wonder, engineering marvels, and breathtaking views — making it one of the most memorable destinations in Zhangjiajie.
