Sichuan is one of China’s most rewarding provinces to explore, but it’s also much larger than many first-time visitors expect. While Chengdu is the gateway to the region, some of Sichuan’s most memorable experiences lie beyond the city.
The good news is that many highlights can be comfortably visited in a single day, especially with an early start and a well-planned route. Others are technically possible but involve long travel times.

1. Chengdu Panda Base & Old Chengdu Highlights
Best for: First-time visitors and families
Duration: 8–9 hours
If you only have one day in Chengdu, this classic itinerary is hard to beat.
Starting early at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and watching giant pandas climb trees, play together, or quietly enjoy bamboo is an experience that delights visitors of all ages.
After lunch, spend the afternoon exploring Chengdu’s slower pace of life. Wander through People’s Park, where locals gather to drink tea and play mahjong, then continue to Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli Ancient Street for traditional architecture, local snacks, and souvenirs.
This tour combines pandas, local culture, and city life in one relaxed day, making it the perfect introduction to Sichuan.
2. Dujiangyan Panda Base & Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Best for: Panda lovers, families, and first-time visitors
Duration: Full day
This is one of our favorite day trips from Chengdu, combining a peaceful panda experience with one of China’s greatest historical landmarks.
Start your day at Dujiangyan Panda Base, where you can watch giant pandas in a quieter, more spacious environment than the Chengdu city panda base.
Later, head to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been controlling the Min River for more than 2,000 years. It’s widely regarded as one of the greatest engineering achievements in ancient China and continues to function today.
Thanks to the short distance between the two attractions, this itinerary is easy and enjoyable without spending hours on the road. It’s an ideal choice for families and first-time visitors who want to experience both Sichuan’s iconic giant pandas and its rich cultural heritage in a single day.
3. Dujiangyan & Mount Qingcheng
Best for: History, Taoist culture, and nature lovers
Duration: Full day
If you enjoy history and mountain scenery, this classic UNESCO route is hard to beat.
Start at the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, then head to Mount Qingcheng in the afternoon. Mount Qingcheng is one of the birthplaces of Taoism. Forest-covered trails, centuries-old temples, and fresh mountain air create a peaceful contrast to the historic site below. To save time, you can take a round-trip cable car.
Many travelers also enjoy ending the day with a relaxing stroll through the old streets of Dujiangyan Ancient Town before returning to Chengdu.
4. Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base
Best for: Panda lovers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts
Duration: Full day
Located in the mountains of Western Sichuan, Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base is widely considered one of the best places to see giant pandas in China.
Compared with the panda tours in Chengdu, Shenshuping offers larger enclosures, fewer visitors, and a beautiful natural setting surrounded by forested mountains.Â
The drive from Chengdu takes only about 2 hours, making it an easy day trip without feeling rushed.Â
5. Panda Volunteer Program
Best for: Animal lovers, families with kids, and travelers who want hands-on experiences
Duration: Full day
If watching giant pandas isn’t enough, the Panda Volunteer Program offers a chance to learn about panda conservation from a different perspective.
At present, 3 panda bases in Sichuan support this program: Dujiangyan Panda Base, Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base, and Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base.
Depending on the day’s schedule, volunteers may help prepare bamboo and steamed corn bread, clean panda enclosures under staff supervision, observe feeding sessions, and attend a short educational program about panda behavior and conservation. At the end of the experience, participants usually receive a volunteer certificate as a memorable keepsake.
While you won’t have direct physical contact with the pandas, spending a day behind the scenes provides a much deeper understanding of the work involved in protecting one of China’s most beloved animals.
Because volunteer places are limited, we recommend booking well in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.
6. Leshan Giant Buddha and Food
Best for: UNESCO heritage and local food
Duration: Full day
Standing 71 meters tall, the Leshan Giant Buddha is the world’s largest ancient stone Buddha and one of China’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Visitors can either walk down the cliffside pathway for close-up views or take a river cruise to appreciate the Buddha’s impressive scale from the water. Both options offer unique perspectives.
Leshan is also known for its food. After sightseeing, don’t miss local specialties such as sweet-skinned duck, bowl chicken, and tofu pudding.
Getting to Leshan is easy. Whether you take a high-speed train from Chengdu or travel by private vehicle, you can comfortably visit the Giant Buddha and return to Chengdu on the same day.
7. Mount Emei
Best for: Mountain scenery and Buddhist culture
Duration: Full day
Mount Emei is one of China’s Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and offers a rewarding combination of natural beauty and spiritual heritage.
A typical day trip includes taking sightseeing buses and cable cars to the Golden Summit, where panoramic views stretch across layers of mountains. On clear days, the scenery is breathtaking, while cloudy weather often creates the famous “sea of clouds.”
Along the way, you may encounter the mountain’s famous monkeys. Just remember to watch them from a safe distance and avoid carrying food openly.
Make sure to plan to leave early to make the most of your day.
8. Xiling Snow Mountain
Best for: Winter scenery, skiing, and families
Duration: Full day
Just a two-hour drive from Chengdu, Xiling Snow Mountain is one of the most convenient mountain getaways in Sichuan. It’s a popular destination year-round, but winter is when the mountain truly comes alive with snow-covered forests, ski slopes, and panoramic alpine views.
Thanks to its easy access and family-friendly facilities, Xiling Snow Mountain is an excellent choice for travelers looking to experience Sichuan’s mountain scenery without a long journey.
9. Sichuan Cuisine Museum Hands-on Experience

If you want to discover why Sichuan cuisine is famous around the world, there’s no better place than the Sichuan Cuisine Museum.
More than just a museum, it’s an interactive experience where you can explore the history of Sichuan cooking, learn about classic ingredients and seasonings, and even join a hands-on cooking class led by local chefs. From preparing Mapo Tofu to Kung Pao Chicken, you’ll learn the techniques behind some of China’s most iconic dishes before enjoying the meal you’ve cooked yourself.

10. Yulin Neighborhood Food Tour

11. Sanxingdui Museum

If you’re fascinated by ancient civilizations, a visit to the Sanxingdui Museum is one of the most unforgettable day trips from Chengdu.
Located about an hour’s drive from the city, the museum showcases the remarkable discoveries of the Sanxingdui archaeological site, which dates back more than 3,000 years. Its mysterious bronze masks, towering bronze trees, and finely crafted gold artifacts reveal a sophisticated civilization that developed alongside, yet distinctly different from, those of ancient central China.

Wuhou Shrine + Jinli Ancient Street + Shu Embroidery Museum
Perfect for travelers interested in history and traditional culture. Learn about the Three Kingdoms period at Wuhou Shrine, browse local snacks and handicrafts along Jinli Ancient Street, and discover the centuries-old art of Shu embroidery at one of Chengdu’s cultural treasures.
100 km Tianfu Greenway Cycling
For a more active experience, rent a bicycle and explore part of Chengdu’s impressive Tianfu Greenway. The city’s 100-kilometer cycling network passes through parks, lakes, rivers, and green spaces, offering a different perspective on everyday life in Chengdu away from the usual tourist attractions.

Can These Famous Sichuan Attractions Be Explored in One Day?
Many of Sichuan’s most famous scenic areas can be comfortably explored in a single day once you arrive. However, because they’re located several hours from Chengdu, you’ll usually need one day to travel there, one full day for sightseeing, and one day to return. In other words, you should plan 2-3 days for these destinations.
Here’s what we recommend:
Jiuzhaigou National Park
Recommended trip length: 3 days or more
A full day is enough to explore Jiuzhaigou‘s colorful lakes, waterfalls, and forest trails. However, getting there from Chengdu takes most of a day by high-speed train and transfer or by flight, so we recommend allowing at least three days.
Huanglong Scenic Area
Recommended trip length: At least 2 days
Huanglong‘s famous travertine pools can usually be visited in one day. Since it’s close to Jiuzhaigou, we almost always recommend combining the two destinations into the same trip rather than visiting Huanglong on its own.
Bipenggou Valley
Recommended trip length: At least 2 days
The valley itself can easily be explored in a day using the shuttle buses. If you prefer a slower pace or want to enjoy the scenery without a long round-trip drive, staying overnight nearby makes the experience much more relaxing.
Hailuogou Glacier Park
Recommended trip length: 3 days
Hailuogou is well suited for a full day of sightseeing, including glacier viewpoints, forest walks, and hot springs. Because of the long drive from Chengdu, we recommend spending at least two nights on the route.
Dagu Glacier
Recommended trip length: 3 days
Most visitors spend one full day exploring Dagu Glacier, including the scenic bus ride and cable car to the glacier viewing platform.Â
Siguniang Mountain
Recommended trip length: 3 days
Although it’s possible to visit Shuangqiaogou as a very long day trip, with an extra day, you can choose between Shuangqiaogou and Changpinggou or both.
Final Thoughts
If your schedule is limited to one day from Chengdu, we recommend choosing destinations such as Leshan Giant Buddha, Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng, Wolong Panda Base, or Xiling Snow Mountain.
For western Sichuan’s high-altitude scenic areas, allowing three days will give you a much more enjoyable and less rushed experience. This is how we usually plan itineraries for our guests, ensuring they have enough time to appreciate the scenery rather than spending most of the trip on the road.
