If you are planning a panda trip in China, you’ve likely realized that “seeing the pandas” isn’t as simple as hopping in a cab to a single zoo. Sichuan is home to several panda bases and conservation centers. Still, the comparison most travelers make usually comes down to two major sites: the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (often called the City Panda Base) and the Dujiangyan Panda Base (officially the Dujiangyan Panda Conservation Center).
As a traveler in 2026, the choice isn’t just about location. It’s about whether you want a high-energy, “celebrity” experience or a quiet, forest-immersion day. Having navigated both dozens of times, I’m going to break down the honest reality of each so you don’t waste your one shot at seeing a national treasure.
The Fast Facts: Side-by-Side Comparison

Chengdu Research Base: The “Celebrity” Experience
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the “Disneyland” of pandas. If you’ve seen a viral video of a panda falling out of a tree or a row of “pink” newborns in a glass crib, it was likely filmed here.
Why do people love it? Because it is incredibly efficient.
It is located just outside the city center. You can leave your hotel at 7:00 AM and be back in time for a spicy hotpot lunch. Besides, it also has the highest concentration of pandas in the world. Plus, the Red Panda area here is also world-class. These little animals often scurry across the wooden walkways right above your head.
However, thanks to its location, the crowds here are also no joke. If you want to see the “star” panda Hua Hua, you still need to queue for about 2 hours for a 3-minute viewing. What’s more, Villa No. 6 (Hua Hua and He Ye) is closed every Monday. Don’t go wrong.
QuietRoutes Tip: If you aren’t obsessed with the celebrity bears, enter through the West Gate. It’s the “locals’ secret” that bypasses the South Gate bottleneck and puts you closer to the new, quieter enclosures.
Dujiangyan Panda Base: The “Authentic” Alternative
Dujiangyan Panda Base is located at the foot of the misty Qingcheng Mountain. Dujiangyan feels less like a tourist attraction and more like a wildlife sanctuary.
While the city base has paved paths and gift shops every fifty yards, Dujiangyan is a hillside forest. The enclosures are massive and follow the natural terrain. You can actually hear the pandas crunching on bamboo because there aren’t 500 people shouting around you.
If you want to join the Panda Volunteer Program, this is the premier spot. For about $120-150 (which goes directly to conservation), you can spend the day as a “keeper.” You’ll clean enclosures, carry fresh bamboo, and make “Wo Wo Tou” (panda bread). It is the only way to move past the tourist fence and see the work that goes into saving the species.
Dujiangyan Panda Valley
Don’t confuse Dujiangyan Panda Base with Panda Valley. They are about 20 minutes apart.
Panda Valley is smaller and more compact. It’s famous for its “free-roaming” red panda area, where you can walk through their habitat.
Dujiangyan Base is larger and is where the volunteer programs happen.
If you want the best “walk in the woods” feel, Panda Valley is the winner. If you want to be a volunteer, you must go to the Base.
How to Get to the Panda Base
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Take Metro Line 3 to the “Panda Avenue” station. From there, a 10-minute shuttle bus takes you to the South Gate. It’s cheap, easy, and reliable.

Dujiangyan Panda Base
The best way is the high-speed train from Xipu Station.
Take Metro Line 2 to Xipu.
Hop on a 25-minute bullet train to Qingchengshan Station (15 RMB, ~US$3).
Take a 15-minute Didi (taxi) to the base.
Note: Book your train tickets on the 12306 app at least 3 days in advance; they sell out fast!
Which Base is Better for Red Pandas?
If you are interested in red pandas, both bases will satisfy you. Just notice the following differences.
Chengdu City Base: This is the best for numbers. There are multiple Red Panda “playgrounds” where you can see dozens of them. They often scurry across overhead wooden bridges right above the tourists.
Panda Valley (Dujiangyan): This is the winner for proximity. You walk through their actual habitat with no fences between you and the red pandas (though touching is strictly forbidden).
Can I See Both in One Day?
Technically, yes, but not necessary.Â
Doing both means spending at least 4 to 5 hours of your day in transit between Chengdu and Dujiangyan. You would have to rush through the City Base at 7:30 AM, sprint to a train or private car by 10:30 AM, and arrive at Dujiangyan just as the midday heat puts most pandas to sleep.
Alternative: Chengdu Panda Tour Itineraries
If you have a full day, you can plan a day trip pairing a panda base with one of the Chengdu attractions. If you have even more days, you can extend your trip to nearby highlights, not just in Chengdu city.
Option 1: Chengdu Panda Base Extended Itineraries
Option 2: Dujiangyan Panda Base Extended Itinerary
The Verdict: Which One Should You Choose?
Choose the Chengdu Research Base if:
- You are traveling with kids or elderly parents who can’t walk long distances.
- You only have a 24-hour layover in Chengdu.
- You absolutely must see the “pink” newborn babies (visible July–September).
Choose the Dujiangyan Panda Base if:
- You want to do the Volunteer Program.
- You are a photographer who needs clear shots without a thousand heads in the frame.
- You are visiting in the Summer. Dujiangyan is much cooler than the city; pandas stay active outdoors much longer here.
Whichever you choose, make sure to visit the pandas at the best time.
