A layover in Chengdu doesn’t have to mean spending hours waiting at the airport. If you have enough time between flights, you could be watching giant pandas, wandering historic streets, relaxing in a local teahouse, or enjoying an authentic Sichuan meal before continuing your journey.
We’ve helped travelers with layovers ranging from just a few hours to several days. The key is knowing what’s realistic based on your flight schedule, which airport you’re using, and whether you’re eligible to enter China during transit.
In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know, from visa-free transit rules and airport logistics to the best Chengdu layover itineraries for different connection times, so you can make the most of every hour.
Understanding Chengdu Layover Visa Policy
Whether you need a visa during your Chengdu layover depends on your nationality and travel itinerary.
Thanks to China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy, travelers from 55 eligible countries and regions can enjoy visa-free entry for up to 10 days, provided they have a valid passport and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region.
QuietRoutes Tip: Not just for short layovers in Chengdu, this policy also allows travelers who enter through Chengdu to visit 11 designated cities in Sichuan Province. It includes Leshan (home to the Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei), Ya’an, Zigong, Meishan, and several other nearby destinations. As long as you have enough time, you can definitely plan a multi-day tour around Chengdu.
Can I Leave Chengdu Airport During a Layover?
Yes, as long as you’re eligible to enter China and have enough time before your next flight.
Regarding the amount of time, it depends not only on your flight schedule but also on which airport you’re arriving at.
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU)
Located about 60 km (37 miles) southeast of downtown Chengdu, Tianfu Airport is the city’s main international gateway. It usually takes 50–70 minutes to reach the city center by car.
If you’re flying through Tianfu Airport, we generally recommend at least 8 hours for a city visit and 10 hours or more if you’d like to include the Giant Panda Base.
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU)
Shuangliu Airport is much closer to the city, around 20 km (12 miles) from downtown. A drive to the city center usually takes 30–40 minutes, making it a better choice for shorter layovers.
Since most international flights now use Tianfu Airport, the suggested layover itineraries below are based on Tianfu. If you’re flying through Shuangliu Airport, you’ll have an even easier time. That is to say, any itinerary suitable for Tianfu will also work for Shuangliu, often with extra time to spare.
A Quick Glance at Layover Time
After helping many travelers plan Chengdu layover tours, we’ve found these guidelines work well:
- Less than 6 hours: Stay at the airport and relax before your next flight.
- 6–8 hours: A short city visit may be possible, especially from Shuangliu Airport.
- 8–10 hours: Enough time for a focused sightseeing trip, such as the Panda Base or Chengdu’s historic center.
- 10–14 hours: Comfortable for visiting several of Chengdu’s top attractions.
- 14–24 hours: Perfect for a Chengdu day tour at a relaxed pace.
- More than 24 hours: Consider a multi-day itinerary under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy.
No matter how long your layover is, we recommend returning to the airport at least three hours before an international flight to allow enough time for check-in, security, and immigration.
Chengdu Layover Tour Itineraries by Available Time
Every layover is different. The suggestions below are based on travelers arriving at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. You can refer to the itineraries and tailor them to your interests and style.
Less Than 6 Hours: Stay There
With less than six hours between flights, we recommend staying at the airport. After immigration (if applicable), baggage procedures, transportation, and returning for your next flight, there isn’t enough time to enjoy the city without unnecessary stress.
Instead, you can consider making the most of the airport itself. Both Tianfu and Shuangliu airports offer comfortable lounges, restaurants serving Sichuan cuisine, cafés, duty-free shopping, and rest areas. If your layover is overnight, booking an airport hotel is usually the most relaxing option.
6–8 Hour Layover
A short visit to Chengdu is possible, especially if you’re arriving at Shuangliu Airport. From Tianfu Airport, you’ll need to keep your itinerary simple and focus on attractions close to the city center.
Option 1: Chengdu Tea & Culture
Airport → People’s Park → Traditional Teahouse → Kuanzhai Alley → Airport
If it’s your first time in Chengdu, this is our favorite itinerary. Start with a stroll through People’s Park, where locals gather to drink tea, play mahjong, and enjoy the relaxed pace of daily life. Then head to nearby Kuanzhai Alleys, a historic neighborhood filled with traditional courtyards, local snacks, handicraft shops, and cafés.
This route offers a great introduction to Chengdu’s culture without feeling rushed.
Option 2: Modern Chengdu
Airport → Chunxi Road → Taikoo Li → Local Lunch → Airport
If you prefer a more modern city experience, spend your layover exploring Chunxi Road, Chengdu’s busiest shopping district. Walk through the stylish open-air streets of Taikoo Li, snap a photo with the famous giant panda climbing the IFS building, browse local and international brands, and enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants serving everything from authentic Sichuan cuisine to international favorites.
This itinerary is ideal if you’re interested in shopping, architecture, and experiencing Chengdu’s vibrant urban lifestyle.
8–10 Hour Layover
With eight to ten hours available, you can comfortably visit one major attraction before returning to the airport. This is when the Giant Panda Base becomes a realistic option.
Option 1: Giant Pandas
Airport → Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding → Local Noodle Lunch → Airport
This is our most popular layover tour, especially when your layover time is in the morning. You can visit pandas when they are most active, then enjoy a bowl of authentic Sichuan noodles before heading back for your flight.
Option 2: Chengdu Culture Tour
Airport → People’s Park → Wuhou Shrine → Jinli Ancient Street → Airport
If you’ve already seen pandas or prefer history and culture, this route combines Chengdu’s most iconic cultural attractions with traditional architecture and local snacks.
Option 3: Chengdu Food Experience
Airport → Yulin Neighborhood Food Tour and Exploration → Airport
If you are a food lover and want a Chengdu food tour during the layover, this itinerary is perfect. The Yulin neighborhood is known for its authentic Chengdu slow life and local food, including hotpot, street snacks, and Sichuan restaurants.
10–14 Hour Layover
This is the ideal amount of time to experience Chengdu without feeling rushed.
Recommended Itinerary:
Airport → Panda Base → People’s Park → Kuanzhai Alley → Hotpot Dinner → Airport
Start the day with Chengdu’s giant pandas in the morning, then return to the city center for tea in People’s Park, explore Kuanzhai Alley, and finish with an authentic Sichuan hotpot before heading back to the airport.
If hotpot isn’t your preference, you can also try local restaurants specializing in Sichuan snacks or traditional home-style cuisine.
14–24 Hour Layover
With more than half a day available, you can confidently arrange a full-day Chengdu tour and explore this city without rushing from place to place.
Recommended Itinerary:
Airport → Panda Base → Wuhou Shrine → Jinli Ancient Street → People’s Park → Sichuan Dinner → Face-Changing Show → Airport or Hotel
This itinerary covers many of Chengdu’s highlights in one day while leaving enough time to slow down and enjoy the city’s famous laid-back atmosphere.
If you have more than 18 hours layover and your onward flight departs early the next morning, we usually recommend staying overnight at a hotel near the airport after your sightseeing.
More Chengdu 1 Day Itineraries Recommendation
More Than 24 Hours
If your layover lasts more than one day and you’re eligible for China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy, Chengdu can become much more than a transit stop.
Instead of staying in the city, you can take advantage of the extra time to explore some of Sichuan’s most famous attractions, like Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Mount Qingcheng, Leshan Giant Buddha, and Mount Emei.
These destinations are all within the permitted travel area under the current 240-hour visa-free transit policy, making them excellent choices for travelers with two or more days before their onward flight.
Is There a Free Chengdu Layover Tour?
Unlike some major international hubs such as Singapore or Seoul, Chengdu Airport doesn’t currently offer an official free layover tour for international transit passengers.
That doesn’t mean you can’t explore the city on your own. If your layover is long enough, you can simply follow one of the suggested itineraries above and take advantage of public transportation, including the metro, airport shuttle, taxis, or ride-hailing services (Didi). It is modern and affordable.
Why We Recommend a Private Chengdu Layover Tour
Though you can explore on your own, a layover tour isn’t just about seeing Chengdu. When you only have a few hours between flights, unexpected traffic, long queues at attractions, or simply getting lost can quickly eat into your sightseeing time. For first-time visitors, figuring out transportation, purchasing tickets, and keeping track of the schedule can also become stressful.
If your goal is to make the most of your limited time without worrying about the logistics, a private layover tour is usually the better choice.
Our private Chengdu layover tours include:
- Airport pickup and drop-off at Tianfu or Shuangliu Airport
- Private vehicle with an experienced local driver
- Professional English-speaking guide
- Flexible itineraries based on your flight schedule
- Flight monitoring and itinerary adjustments accordingly
- Customized routes based on your interests, whether that’s pandas, food, culture, or photography
Most importantly, we’ll make sure you’re back at the airport with enough time before your departure. Travel with us, and you can enjoy Chengdu with confidence instead of stress.

FAQ
Is a 6-hour layover enough to leave Chengdu Airport?
It depends on which airport you’re using and whether you need to clear immigration. In general, we don’t recommend leaving the airport with less than six hours between flights. Is a 9-hour layover in Chengdu enough to see the Giant Pandas?
Yes. A 9-hour layover is usually enough to visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, especially if you travel by private vehicle. You’ll also have time for a quick local meal before returning to the airport.
Can I leave Chengdu Airport during a layover?
Yes, as long as you’re eligible to enter mainland China. Travelers with a valid Chinese visa can leave the airport after immigration. If you don’t have a visa, you may still qualify for China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy, depending on your nationality and onward flight itinerary.

Which airport is better for a layover: Tianfu or Shuangliu?
