Itinerary
Day 1: Chengdu → Dujiangyan Panda Base → Dujiangyan Irrigation System
The Experience:
After breakfast about 7:00-07:30 AM, we leave downtown Chengdu and head northwest toward Dujiangyan by private vehicle.
The journey usually takes around 1–1.5 hours, and along the way the modern city gradually gives way to greener countryside and mountain scenery at the edge of western Sichuan.
Our first stop is the famous Dujiangyan Panda Base, one of the best places near Chengdu to see giant pandas in a quieter and more natural environment. Compared with the larger panda bases in the city, Dujiangyan feels more peaceful and mountain-like.
We usually recommend arriving in the morning before 09:00 AM, when pandas are most active during feeding time. You’ll have the chance to observe giant pandas eating, climbing, playing, and resting in spacious enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitat.
Depending on the season, you may also see red pandas and younger pandas in the nursery area.
Along the visit, we’ll also learn about panda conservation efforts and Sichuan’s important role in protecting this national treasure.
After a simple lunch in Dujiangyan city, we continue to the world-famous Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 2,000 years of history.
Built during the Qin Dynasty, this incredible ancient water engineering project still functions today and continues to control flooding and irrigate the fertile Chengdu Plain.
We begin exploring from the scenic area near the Min River, where ancient bridges, flowing waterways, and mountain views create a unique atmosphere blending culture and nature. Walking across the famous Anlan Suspension Bridge, you can enjoy panoramic views of the river, irrigation channels, and surrounding green hills.
As we continue through the site, you’ll discover key sections such as Fish Mouth Levee, Flying Sand Weir, and Baopingkou Water Channel. These structures demonstrate the wisdom of ancient Chinese engineering and Taoist ideas of working with nature rather than against it.
Your guide will explain how the system was designed without dams and why it remains one of the greatest engineering achievements in Chinese history.
If you’re interested, we can also take an optional walk through Lidui Park and Qingyuan Garden within the Dujiangyan scenic area. Both are quiet and elegant, especially suitable for travelers interested in Chinese garden culture, photography, and slower-paced exploration.
In the late afternoon, we can stroll through Dujiangyan Ancient Town, where traditional Sichuan-style streets, tea houses, local snacks, and relaxed riverside life offer a slower pace compared with central Chengdu. It’s a wonderful place to experience local culture and try regional dishes before checking into your hotel.
In the evening, if weather and timing are suitable, we can also visit Dujiangyan’s popular “Blue Tears” riverside light installation. Although it is a manmade night attraction, the glowing blue reflections along the waterways create a surprisingly magical atmosphere after dark.
Tonight, enjoy a peaceful evening in Dujiangyan at the foot of Qingcheng Mountain, surrounded by fresh mountain air and a more relaxed atmosphere than the city.
Highlights
- Visit the peaceful Dujiangyan Panda Base and see giant pandas up close
- Explore the ancient Dujiangyan Irrigation System and scenic riverside views
- Enjoy Dujiangyan Ancient Town and the optional Blue Tears night lights
Tips
- Visit the panda base early for the most active pandas

Day 2: Mount Qingcheng → Zhongshuge Dujiangyan → Chengdu
The Experience:
After breakfast, we head to the front mountain area of Mount Qingcheng, one of the most famous Taoist mountains in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This mountain is surrounded by lush forests, streams, and misty peaks, known for its peaceful atmosphere and deep connection to Taoist culture.
We begin exploring along the shaded walking trails, passing ancient Taoist temples hidden among the greenery.
Depending on your pace and preference, we may combine hiking with a cable car ride for a more relaxed experience. Along the route, you’ll enjoy fresh mountain air, quiet nature scenery, and beautiful views over the forested hills of western Sichuan.
Compared with more challenging mountain destinations in China, the front mountain of Qingcheng is ideal for travelers looking for a comfortable mix of culture, nature, and light hiking. It’s a refreshing escape from the busy city and one of the best places near Chengdu to experience traditional Taoist mountain culture.
After descending the mountain, you will have a simple lunch in Dujiangyan.
Then, we can visit the famous Zhongshuge Bookstore in Dujiangyan Sunac Mall. Known for its creative mirror designs, dramatic curved bookshelves, and artistic interiors, Zhongshuge has become one of the most photogenic bookstores in Sichuan.

I and my husband really enjoyed this short trip near Chengdu. Sylvia was thoughtful and adjusted the pace comfortably for us throughout the tour. Her recommendation to visit Qingyuan Bonsai Garden was a lovely surprise. We were both attracted to the old trees. We also loved the short boat ride at Qingcheng Mountain. The driver was excellent as well, always helping with our large suitcases and dropping us directly at the hotel entrance each time.
Overall, a very smooth and enjoyable trip.
