Travelling between Chengdu and Chongqing is much easier than many first-time visitors expect. These “twin cities” are the pulse of southwest China: one known for its laid-back teahouses and pandas, the other for its neon-lit skyscrapers and gravity-defying monorails.
Because they are only about 300km (186 miles) apart, the logistics are incredibly efficient. For most travelers, the high-speed train is the best option: fast, comfortable, and surprisingly simple to use. But depending on your schedule, budget, or travel style, flights and private overland transfers can also make sense.
In this guide, we’ll walk through the real differences between each option, what the journey actually feels like, and which one we personally recommend for different types of travelers.

1. Chengdu to Chongqing by High-Speed Train (Best Option)
For most travelers, the high-speed train is easily the best way to travel between Chengdu and Chongqing.
Speed, Frequency, and Duration
Between the two cities, there are both “G” and “D” trains, departing roughly every 10 to 15 minutes.
The “G” Trains (Fastest, up to 350km/h): These take between 62 and 90 minutes. If available, look for the “Fuxing” intelligent trains. They offer the smoothest ride and the best 5G connectivity.
The “D” Trains (Standard High-Speed, 200-250km/h): These take about 2 hours. They are slightly cheaper but stop at more suburban stations.
Once onboard, the experience is modern and comfortable. Trains are clean, punctual, and easy to navigate even if you don’t speak Chinese.
Which Station to Use?
This is where most travelers get stuck. Both cities have multiple stations. Choosing the wrong one can add an hour of taxi time to your trip.
In Chengdu
- Chengdu East Railway Station (Chengdu Dong): The main hub, 90% of high-speed trains leave from here. Usually, it’s the easiest station for international visitors. It’s well connected to Metro Lines 2 and 7.
- Chengdu South Railway Station (Chengdu Nan): Best if you are staying in the Hi-Tech Zone or near the Wuhou district.
In Chongqing
- Chongqing North Railway Station (Chongqing Bei): The best overall for most tourists. Perfect if you’re heading to the central region like Jiefangbei or Hongyadong areas.
- Shapingba Station: The absolute best for “Old Town” vibes. It’s located directly underneath a shopping mall and is closest to the Ciqikou ancient town.
- Chongqing West Station (Chongqing Xi): Generally further out; only use this if your specific train doesn’t stop at the other two.
- Chongqing East Station (Chongqing Dong): Opened in 2025, this is now the world’s largest railway station. Located in Chongqing’s Nan’an District, it’s designed to serve as the major high-speed rail hub connecting southwest China with the rest of the country. However, for now, only a limited number of routes operate between Chengdu and Chongqing through this station.
Unlike airports, all railway stations are connected directly to city metro systems, making the trip feel much smoother from start to finish.
How to Book Train Tickets
China’s ticketing system is now 100% digital. You do not need a paper ticket; your Passport is your ticket.
The Official Way (12306 App)
The China Railway app is now fully localized in English. It is the cheapest way to buy (no service fees) and lets you choose your seats (e.g., “Window” or “Aisle”).
The Seamless Way (like Trip.com)
If the official app feels too clunky, Trip.com is the gold standard for international travelers. But do remember to check the final price carefully before paying, as extra fees are sometimes added during booking.
Class Levels
- Second Class: Perfectly comfortable, similar to “Economy Plus” on a flight.
- First Class: Wider seats, 2-2 configuration, and much quieter.
- Business Class: The “First Class Flight” experience. Pod seats that lay completely flat, free snacks, and access to the VIP lounge at the station.
Ticket prices usually range ¥80-900 / $12-132, depending on the train type and seat class. You can choose the option that best matches your comfort level and budget.
2. Chengdu to Chongqing by Flight
Technically, flying between Chengdu and Chongqing is possible. However, for most travelers, it’s not the most practical option.
Although flight time is short, airports in both cities are far from downtown. Once you factor in transportation, check-in, and security time, flying often takes longer than taking the train overall.
Flights can still make sense if:
- You’re connecting internationally
- You find a very cheap fare
- Your hotel is near the airport
Otherwise, the high-speed train is usually easier and less stressful.
3. Chengdu to Chongqing by Private Car
If you prefer flexibility and comfort, you can hire a private car through the hotel or a Didi Premier service.
Depending on traffic and stops along the way, the drive usually takes around 4–5 hours.
QuietRoutes Tip:
This option works especially well in the Chengdu-The Dazu Rock Carvings-Chongqing route.
Located almost exactly halfway between Chengdu and Chongqing, these UNESCO-listed carvings are world-class but difficult to reach by train. If you hire a driver, you can leave Chengdu at 8:00 AM, spend three hours in Dazu, and arrive at your Chongqing hotel by dinner time.
The cost is between ¥800 – ¥1,200 for a one-way trip with a stop.
4. Chengdu to Chongqing By Bus
Long-distance buses still operate between Chengdu and Chongqing, but nowadays they’re far less popular than high-speed trains. For most international travelers, we usually don’t recommend buses unless your budget is the absolute top priority or you have oversized cargo that the train won’t allow.
Bus Stations
In Chengdu, you can find direct coaches to Chongqing at major hubs including Chengdu East Railway Coach Station, Chadianzi Bus Station, and Xinnanmen Tourist Bus Center.
Arrival in Chongqing, most buses will drop you at Chongqing North Railway Station South Square Coach Station or Chongqing West.
The journey usually takes between 3.5 and 5 hours, depending on which station you arrive at in Chongqing and the current traffic.
Chongqing to Chengdu (Reverse Route)
Traveling from Chongqing to Chengdu works almost the same way.
High-speed trains run frequently throughout the day, with similar travel times and ticket prices.
For most travelers staying in central Chongqing, departing from Chongqing North or Shapingba Station is the most convenient choice.
Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip
Arrive Early (But Not Too Early)
Because of security and passport checks, you cannot “run” onto a train 5 minutes before departure. Arrive at the station 40 minutes before your train. You’ll need to go through a baggage X-ray and a manual ID check by a staff member.
Luggage
There are no weight limits, but you must be able to carry your own bags. There are large luggage racks at the end of every carriage. If you have “over-sized” suitcases, try to board as soon as the gate opens to snag a spot.
The “Silent Carriage”
When booking on the 12306 app, look for the “Silent Carriage” (静音车厢) option. If you want to nap or work without hearing loud phone videos or chatter, this is a game-changer.
The Verdict
If you simply want the easiest and most efficient way to travel, choose the high-speed train.
If you value flexibility or want to explore places between the cities, a private transfer may be worth considering.
Flights only become useful in specific situations, while buses are generally the least comfortable option today.
For most travelers, the decision is actually very simple once you arrive in China because the train system is far more convenient than many people expect.
