Planning a family trip to Sichuan can feel overwhelming. With giant pandas, colorful lakes, ancient temples, snow-capped mountains, and attractive street snacks, it’s not always obvious which places are worth visiting, especially when traveling with children.
After helping families explore Sichuan for years, we’ve found that the best itinerary isn’t necessarily the one that includes the most attractions. It’s the one that balances exciting experiences with a comfortable pace, minimizes long travel days, and leaves room for children to simply enjoy the journey.
This 10-day itinerary is our favorite family route in Sichuan. It combines Chengdu’s famous pandas, the breathtaking scenery of Western Sichuan, and the fairy-tale lakes of Jiuzhaigou, while keeping transfers manageable and allowing time to relax.
Why We Recommend This Itinerary
There are countless ways to spend 10 days in Sichuan. Rather than rushing from one famous landmark to another, this itinerary focuses on experiences that both young children and teenagers genuinely enjoy, while keeping travel days comfortable and well-paced.
Your journey begins in Chengdu, one of China’s most relaxed and family-friendly cities. Here, you’ll meet the region’s most famous residents, the giant pandas, while also tasting local snacks and experiencing the charm of traditional Sichuan culture.
From the city, the adventure continues to Jiuzhaigou National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to the park’s excellent shuttle bus system, families can explore at their own pace without long or demanding walks.
You’ll also experience the beauty of Western Sichuan. Gentle walks through Siguniang Mountain and Bipenggou make nature both accessible and enjoyable for children.
The itinerary includes a ride on China’s high-speed rail, traveling at speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph). For many children, the train journey becomes an adventure in itself.
One thing to keep in mind is that some mountain areas on this route reach elevations of around 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). However, the itinerary is designed with a gradual ascent and avoids spending long periods at higher elevations. Most families adjust well with a relaxed pace, regular hydration, and plenty of opportunities to rest.

Customize This Itinerary for Your Family
Every family travels differently, and there’s no one-size-fits-all itinerary. One of the biggest advantages of a private tour is the flexibility to adjust part of the route while keeping the overall trip to 10 days.
Option 1: Leshan & Mount Emei
If your family prefers food, culture & UNESCO Heritage over alpine scenery, consider replacing the Western Sichuan section with a visit to Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei.Â
This option is especially suitable for families with younger children, multi-generational groups, and travelers who prefer shorter driving distances and lower altitudes.
Option 2: Panda Volunteer Program Experience
If your children are passionate about giant pandas, arrange a full day to participate in the Panda Volunteer Program in either the Dujiangyan Panda Base or the Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base.
Option 3: Sichuan Cuisine Hands-on Experience
If you like Sichuan food, you won’t want to miss the Sichuan Cuisine Museum and cooking a Sichuan dish by yourself. Also, you can spend a day wandering along the Yulin Road for local restaurants.
Option 4: Slow Down
Not every family enjoys changing hotels frequently. If you’re the same, consider spending more time in Chengdu like locals.
Plan a Family Trip That Fits Your Pace
