Zhangjiajie Huanglong Cave
One of China’s largest and most spectacular underground caves.
Overview
Huanglong Cave, also known as Yellow Dragon Cave, is one of the largest and most impressive karst cave systems in China. Located near Wulingyuan, not far from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the cave stretches deep beneath the mountains with massive chambers, underground rivers, and countless stalactites and stalagmites.
The cave system was first opened to tourism in the 1980s and quickly became famous for its enormous underground spaces. Inside, visitors walk through a series of illuminated halls where towering limestone formations rise from the cave floor and ceiling.
One of the most unique features of Huanglong Cave is its underground river, where visitors ride a small boat through dark caverns while passing dramatic rock formations.
With its vast chambers and colorful lighting, Huanglong Cave offers a completely different landscape from the sandstone pillar mountains that dominate the rest of Zhangjiajie.
Why Visit
While Zhangjiajie is best known for its dramatic mountain scenery, Huanglong Cave reveals an equally fascinating world hidden beneath the surface.
Stepping inside the cave feels like entering a vast underground cathedral. Enormous limestone formations rise from the darkness while stalactites hang from the ceiling like stone chandeliers.
The highlight of the experience is the boat ride through the underground river, where quiet waters wind through the cave’s chambers surrounded by towering rock formations.
For travelers who want to experience a different side of Zhangjiajie’s natural geology, Huanglong Cave provides one of the most unique and memorable attractions in the region.
