Overview
Potala Palace is the most iconic landmark of Tibet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising above Lhasa on Marpo Ri (Red Hill), this grand palace once served as the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas and remains a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism, history, and architecture.
With its towering white and red walls, golden roofs, sacred chapels, and ancient murals, Potala Palace is both a spiritual monument and a masterpiece of Himalayan design.
Why Visit
Visiting Potala Palace is not just sightseeing — it’s stepping into the spiritual and political history of Tibet. The palace dominates Lhasa’s skyline, and climbing its stairways feels like ascending through centuries of devotion, ritual, and legend. Inside, you’ll discover gilded stupas, intricate thangka paintings, and dimly lit halls scented with butter lamps.
Beyond its architectural grandeur, the experience offers a deeper understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and the cultural resilience of the region. Even from the square below, the palace’s silhouette against the plateau sky is unforgettable.
