Is Kunming worth a stop, or should I go straight to Lijiang?
Definitely stop. Kunming has the best food in the province and a much more "real" feel than the highly commercialized old towns further north. It’s the best place to adjust to the altitude.
Is the Stone Forest too touristy?
It is popular, but its scale is vast. If you avoid the "Major Stone Forest" and spend more time in the "Minor Stone Forest" and the peripheral trails, you will find plenty of solitude.
