Overview
Set on a high plateau in southwest China, Kunming has long been called the “City of Eternal Spring.” Unlike China’s megacities, it feels approachable and human-scaled, with parks, markets, and neighborhoods woven into daily life.
Kunming is not about headline attractions. Its appeal lies in street food stalls, lakeside walks, flower markets, and the sense of transition — a place where Han, Yi, and other ethnic cultures meet before the landscapes of greater Yunnan unfold.

Kunming offers balance. It’s urban without feeling overwhelming, modern yet rooted in local routines.
The city’s relaxed rhythm makes it an ideal arrival point for Yunnan: a place to recover from long flights, adjust to altitude, and ease into slower travel. Morning tai chi by the lake, evening street snacks, and year-round mild temperatures create a calm, everyday atmosphere rarely found in large Chinese cities.

FAQ
Is Kunming worth a stop, or should I go straight to Lijiang?
Definitely stop. Kunming has the best food in the province and a much more "real" feel than the highly commercialized old towns further north. It’s the best place to adjust to the altitude.
Is the Stone Forest too touristy?
It is popular, but its scale is vast. If you avoid the "Major Stone Forest" and spend more time in the "Minor Stone Forest" and the peripheral trails, you will find plenty of solitude.
Is Kunming suitable for first-time visitors to China?
Yes. Kunming is easy to navigate, less crowded than major cities, and a comfortable introduction to China.
Is Kunming expensive?
Kunming is affordable. Food, transport, and accommodation cost less than in China’s coastal megacities.
