Songpan Ancient Town
A rugged frontier town where Tibetan highlands meet Ming-era city walls.
Overview
Songpan Ancient Town sits on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau in northern Sichuan, about 320 km from Chengdu. For centuries, it served as a strategic military fortress and trade hub connecting China with the Tibetan regions.
Today, Songpan is best known as a historic gateway town to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. Travelers often pass through here while exploring the Minshan Mountains, but those who stop for a few hours discover something unique: a quiet high-altitude town surrounded by massive stone walls, Tibetan prayer flags, and horse caravans heading into the mountains.
Unlike heavily commercialized ancient towns elsewhere in China, Songpan still feels rugged and authentic. Its atmosphere blends Tibetan, Qiang, Hui, and Han cultures, reflected in local food, mosques, temples, and traditional markets.
Many travelers visit Songpan as a short cultural stop or overnight base between Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou, while others stay longer to explore nearby alpine valleys and trekking routes.
