8-Day Winter Wonderland in Harbin & Mt. Changbai

The Experience

After you arrive at Harbin Taiping International Airport or Harbin train station, our driver will meet you and take you to your hotel.

Depending on your arrival time, you can have a rest in the hotel, or take an easy walk around the city center to get your first feel for Harbin.

For reference, you can wander through the Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie), the city’s best-known historic pedestrian street. Many of the buildings here reflect Harbin’s Russian and European influences, a reminder of the city’s unusual history as a meeting point between China and the wider world. In winter, the street feels completely different, with snow and ice adding to its atmosphere.

We’ll keep today relaxed so you can adjust to the cold and save your energy for the winter activities ahead.

The Experience

Today is the big winter experience, and we’ll spend the day exploring different sides of Harbin before heading to the Ice and Snow Festival.

We’ll start around St. Sophia Square, where the former St. Sophia Church is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and a reminder of Harbin’s strong Russian influence. From there, we’ll walk along Central Street and continue toward the Songhua River waterfront, where you can see how local life changes when the river freezes.

In the afternoon, we’ll head to the Harbin Ice and Snow World. Arriving while there is still daylight lets you appreciate the enormous scale of the ice buildings before they are illuminated. As darkness falls, the sculptures and castles light up in changing colors, creating a completely different atmosphere. We’ll give you plenty of time to explore, take photos, and enjoy some of the winter activities inside the park.

The Experience

We’ll leave Harbin after breakfast and drive for around 5–6 hours toward China Snow Town, with a stop around Yabuli, one of Northeast China’s best-known winter sports areas.

After arriving in Xuexiang, China's Snow Town, we’ll settle into a local guesthouse and take a walk through the village. The thick snow that builds up on the wooden houses and rooftops is what gives Xuexiang its famous “snow mushroom” appearance.

Depending on conditions, we may also see villagers going about their daily winter routines. Tonight, you’ll stay in a traditional local-style room, with a kang, a heated brick bed that has long been used in northern Chinese homes to keep warm during winter.

Tips

• The road can be snowy and icy, so allow some flexibility in the driving time.
• Accommodation in Xuexiang is more basic than in Harbin, but that is part of the local experience.

The Experience

We’ll start early with a walk through Xuexiang while the village is still quiet. This is often the best time to enjoy the scenery, before day visitors arrive.

After breakfast, you’ll have some free time to enjoy the snow at your own pace. If you're interested, we can arrange simple winter activities or spend more time walking around the village and taking photos.

Later, we’ll leave Xuexiang by private vehicle and continue toward Dunhua. The journey takes several hours, but it gives you another chance to watch the snowy mountain scenery change along the way. Dunhua is a convenient stop before we continue toward Changbai Mountain tomorrow.

The Experience

Today we leave Dunhua and continue by private vehicle toward Erdaobaihe, the small town at the foot of Changbai Mountain. It is a longer driving day, but the scenery gradually changes as we move deeper into the forested mountain region. If road and weather conditions allow, we can make a stop around the Jingpo Lake area to break up the journey and enjoy the winter landscape.

After checking in, we’ll keep the evening easy, have a warm local dinner, and prepare for tomorrow’s mountain visit.

Changbai Mountain is a sacred mountain in Northeast China, and its forests, volcanic landscape, and Tianchi crater lake are the main reason we come this far north.

• This is mainly a transfer day, so bring snacks and drinks for the drive.

The Experience

Today is the main mountain day of the journey. After breakfast, we’ll drive to the Changbai Mountain scenic area and take the designated mountain transport toward the Tianchi area.

Note: In winter, the higher sections can be extremely cold and windy, so it may be closed.

Tianchi, or Heaven Lake, sits inside the crater of Changbai Mountain, a volcanic mountain that has shaped the landscape and local traditions for centuries. On a clear winter day, the frozen lake surrounded by snow-covered peaks is an extraordinary sight.

After coming back down, we’ll warm up at the Changbai Mountain hot springs before returning to Erdaobaihe for the night.

• Conditions at Tianchi can change quickly, and the lake may not always be visible.

The Experience

After several full days in the snow and mountains, we’ll keep today a little more relaxed. We’ll leave Erdaobaihe after breakfast and travel west by private vehicle toward Jilin City.

Jilin is one of the best-known places in China for rime, a beautiful natural phenomenon that forms when water vapor freezes onto the trees along the river. The conditions are especially favorable in winter because of the relatively warm river water and the cold air. We’ll settle into our hotel and keep the evening easy, ready for an early start tomorrow to look for the best rime scenery.

Tips

• Rime is weather-dependent, so we keep the schedule flexible where possible.

The Experience

We’ll start early today and drive to Rime Island (Wusong Island), one of Northeast China's best-known places to see rime, or frost-covered trees. Timing matters because the rime is usually most beautiful in the early morning, when the air is cold and still.

We’ll take a relaxed walk around the island, giving you time to enjoy the scenery and take photos. Rime is a natural phenomenon, so we can’t guarantee exactly how heavy it will be, but winter conditions in this area make it one of the best places to try.

After the visit, we’ll return by private vehicle and continue to Jilin or Changchun airport or train station for your onward journey.
