Experience

Your Western Sichuan journey begins in Chengdu. After meeting your driver and guide in the morning, you will head west toward the mountains, gradually leaving the Sichuan Basin behind.

The first major stop is Mount Siguniang (Siguniangshan), famous for its dramatic snow peaks, deep valleys, and alpine scenery. Along the way, the landscape changes quickly from city outskirts to winding mountain roads, rivers, and Tibetan-style villages.

Depending on timing and weather, you may explore areas such as Shuangqiao Valley, where wooden walkways, forests, and glacial streams create some of the most beautiful scenery in Western Sichuan.

After lunch, continue driving toward Danba through mountain valleys and riverside roads. As you approach Danba, traditional Tibetan watchtowers and stone villages begin to appear across the hillsides.

You will arrive in Danba in the evening and enjoy a slower pace in this peaceful mountain town.

Today’s scenery becomes wider and more open as forests gradually give way to grasslands and highland meadows.

One of the highlights is Tagong Grassland, where yaks graze beneath snow mountains, and colorful prayer flags stretch across the wind.

Then, you will visit Tagong Monastery, an important Tibetan Buddhist monastery with a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful mountain backdrop. On clear days, you may also see Mount Yala, one of the sacred mountains of the region.

After the visit, you will continue driving toward Xinduqiao, famous among photographers for its golden light, rolling hills, Tibetan houses, and poplar trees.

The area looks especially beautiful during sunset when the warm light spreads across the valley.

  • Tibetan Buddhist culture at Tagong Monastery
  • Views of Mount Yala

We only had a few days in Sichuan, but this route gave us a wonderful mix of experiences. The drive itself was incredibly scenic, especially around Tagong and hailuogou. Everything was well organized, Judy, our guide, was nice and professional, and we always felt comfortable during the trip.
