Itinerary
Day 1: Chengdu → Tangjiahe Nature Reserve → Night Wildlife Observation
The Experience:
This morning, we leave Chengdu behind and travel north by private vehicle toward Tangjiahe Nature Reserve, which is one of China’s most important wildlife habitats. The journey takes around four to five hours.
Along the way, we begin to understand why this region remains one of the country’s best-kept natural secrets.
After arriving in Tangjiahe, we check into our accommodation inside the reserve and take some time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Unlike many scenic areas focused on sightseeing, Tangjiahe is first and foremost a living ecosystem, known for its healthy populations of takins, macaques, deer, and the rare golden snub-nosed monkey.
As darkness falls, we join a guided night wildlife observation experience. Moving quietly along designated roads and forest edges, we search for animals that become active after sunset.
The experience is less about ticking off sightings and more about experiencing the reserve’s unique nighttime atmosphere.
Highlights
- Guided night wildlife observation
Tips
- Keep voices low during wildlife observation.
- A small flashlight can be useful around the lodge.
- Overnight: Tangjiahe Nature Reserve
Day 2: Tangjiahe Nature Reserve Forest Hiking Trails → Wildlife Habitat → Qingxi Ancient Town
The Experience:
Today is dedicated to exploring Tangjiahe’s remarkable natural environment on foot.
After breakfast, we head into the reserve’s network of hiking trails accompanied by our guide. The pace is relaxed, allowing us to appreciate the landscape and watch for wildlife along the way.
Besides, we can also learn how Tangjiahe became one of China’s earliest protected ecosystems. The reserve forms part of a larger wildlife corridor connecting several important habitats across northern Sichuan.
Depending on conditions, we may spot takins grazing on distant slopes, troops of monkeys moving through the trees, or a variety of native bird species (not guaranteed).
In the late afternoon, we leave the reserve and continue by private vehicle to Qingxi Ancient Town, which retains a quieter atmosphere than many better-known ancient towns.
After checking into our hotel, we can stroll through stone-paved lanes, cross old bridges, and enjoy a peaceful evening beside the river.
Highlights
- Guided hiking in Tangjiahe Nature Reserve
- Opportunities for wildlife observation
- Explore the historic streets of Qingxi Ancient Town
Tips
- Wear comfortable hiking shoes.
- Bring binoculars if you enjoy wildlife watching.
- Keep your camera ready, but avoid approaching wild animals.

Day 3: Guangyuan | Jianmen Pass → Zhaohua Ancient City
The Experience:
Today, we explore Jianmen Pass, one of the most dramatic mountain gateways in China and a place deeply connected to the history of the Three Kingdoms period. Surrounded by cliffs and forested ridges, the pass has protected Sichuan for centuries and remains one of the region’s most impressive natural landscapes.
Except for the Pass, the highlights of the scenic area are the Bird Path and the Ape Route. Depending on your interests and fitness level, you can choose between two classic routes.
The Bird Path is a cliffside walkway built along the mountainside. The route is relatively accessible and rewards us with sweeping views of Jianmen Pass, surrounding valleys, and rugged peaks. It offers plenty of excitement without requiring special equipment and is ideal for families with teenagers and visitors who want to enjoy the scenery and history at a comfortable pace.
For adventurous travelers, the Ape Route offers a very different experience. This exposed cliffside route requires a safety harness and professional climbing equipment provided at the site. Following steel cables and narrow ledges attached to the rock face, participants experience a thrilling ascent inspired by the ancient mountain crossings that once challenged travelers along the Shu Road.
In the afternoon, we continue to Zhaohua Ancient City, which is less commercialized than many famous ancient towns. Zhaohua retains a relaxed atmosphere and a strong connection to its past. We stroll through old streets and historic gates while learning about the city’s role during the Three Kingdoms era before settling in for the night.
Highlights
- Choose between the cliffside Bird Path or the scenic Monkey Route
- Experience the spectacular landscapes of Jianmen Pass
- Explore the peaceful streets of Zhaohua Ancient City
Tips
- The Bird Path is suitable for most travelers with moderate mobility.
- The Ape Route requires a safety harness and is best for confident, adventure-minded visitors.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water for your time in the mountains.
- Overnight: Zhaohua Ancient City
- Meals: Breakfast
Day 4: Zhaohua Ancient City → Chengdu
The Experience:
After breakfast, we enjoy a relaxed morning before beginning our journey back to Chengdu.
Depending on timing, there may be an opportunity for a final walk around Zhaohua Ancient City, when the streets are quieter and residents begin their daily routines.
We then travel south by private vehicle.Â
By afternoon, we arrive in Chengdu, where our journey comes to an end.
Although only four days long, this route reveals a side of Sichuan that many visitors never see, combining wildlife, hiking, history, and local culture far from the region’s busiest tourist routes.
