Highlights

Itinerary

The Experience:

Your Western Sichuan journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Chengdu.

Leaving the busy city behind, the road gradually winds through the mountains of Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, where the scenery shifts from urban plains to deep valleys, forests, and rushing rivers.

Today’s drive is about 220 km and usually takes 6–8 hours, including sightseeing stops along the way.

The first major stop is the Wolong National Nature Reserve area, located at around 1,900–2,000 meters above sea level.

Wolong is one of China’s most important giant panda conservation regions and feels much more peaceful and natural compared with the larger panda bases near Chengdu. Surrounded by dense mountains and fresh alpine air, this area offers a quieter and more authentic mountain atmosphere.

Depending on timing and availability, you may visit the panda area, walk through the forest surroundings, or simply enjoy the transition into Western Sichuan’s landscape.

After lunch, the drive continues upward toward Balang Mountain. The road climbs quickly through winding mountain passes, and you’ll clearly feel the scenery changing as elevation increases.

Balang Mountain Pass reaches around 4,500 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest points of the trip. Along the way, forests gradually give way to alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and distant snow peaks. On clear days, the views can stretch far across the mountains of Siguniangshan National Park.

One of the best viewpoints today is Maobiliang Ridge (~3,500–3,800 meters). This famous ridge is known for its panoramic views of the Four Sisters Mountains and is especially beautiful in the late afternoon light.

If the weather is clear, you can often see Yaomei Peak, the highest peak of Mount Siguniang, rising dramatically above the surrounding valleys. Many photographers wait here for sunset, when the snow mountains glow golden under the changing light.

By evening, arrive in Siguniang Town (~3,200 meters). The town is small, relaxed, and surrounded by towering peaks, making it a perfect base for the next day’s hiking adventure.

After checking into your hotel, you can enjoy a warm local dinner and rest early to adapt comfortably to the altitude.

Highlights

  • Panda experience in Wolong
  • Balang Mountain scenic drive
  • Maobiliang Ridge panoramic viewpoint
  • First views of Mount Siguniang

Tips

  • Roads today involve significant altitude gain; drink plenty of water.
  • Keep a jacket easily accessible, as mountain weather changes quickly.
  • Sunset photography at Maobiliang Ridge can be excellent on clear evenings.
Wolong panda Base

The Experience:

Today is dedicated to hiking in Mount Siguniang, often called the “Alps of the East.” The scenic area contains three valleys:

  • Changping Valley: Best for trekking and immersive hiking
  • Shuangqiao Valley: Easiest for sightseeing and relaxed walks
  • Haizi Valley: More remote and physically demanding

Depending on your interests and fitness level, we have two hiking styles to choose:

Option 1: Changping Valley Hiking

Route: Entrance → Lama Temple → Xiaganhaizi → Shangganhaizi → Hongshizhen → Muluozi

The full round-trip hike is approximately 22 km and usually takes 6–8 hours.

This is the more adventurous choice and ideal for travelers who want a true mountain trekking experience.

Horse riding services are available in parts of the valley for travelers who prefer a lighter trekking experience.

For beginners or families, a shorter hike to Kushutan and back offers a gentler option of around 7 km round-trip.

Option 2: Shuangqiao Valley Hiking

This option is more relaxed while still offering stunning scenery.

A sightseeing bus takes you directly to Hongshanlin near the upper valley, where you can slowly hike downhill through forests, streams, meadows, and snow mountain viewpoints.

The best hiking section is:

Hongshanlin → Potala Peak (5.5–6 km)

Most travelers spend 5–7 leisurely hours exploring the valley.

After hiking, your driver will transfer you back to the hotel in Siguniang Town.

Highlights

  • Flexible hiking choices for different fitness levels
  • Alpine scenery and glacier valleys
  • Tibetan mountain culture and horse riding experience
  • Snow mountain photography opportunities

Tips

  • Wear layered clothing and comfortable hiking shoes.
  • UV radiation is strong at high altitude; sunscreen and sunglasses are important.
  • Walk slowly and avoid overexertion at altitude.
Siguniang Mountain Changpinggou

The Experience:

After breakfast in Siguniang Town, continue your journey deeper into the Tibetan regions of Western Sichuan.

Today’s drive is relatively relaxed compared with previous mountain-road sections, covering around 110–130 km in approximately 4–5 hours with sightseeing and photo stops along the way.

Leaving Mount Siguniang behind, the road gradually descends from alpine mountain scenery into greener river valleys and traditional Tibetan settlements.

Along the route, you’ll pass scattered stone houses, prayer flags, grazing yaks, and small farming villages surrounded by terraced hillsides. Compared with the dramatic snow mountain landscapes of the previous days, today feels slower, quieter, and more cultural.

As you approach Danba County, the scenery changes again into one of the most unique cultural landscapes in Sichuan.

Danba sits at around 1,800–2,000 meters elevation and is famous for its ancient Tibetan watchtowers, sometimes called the “Kingdom of Thousand Watchtowers.” These tall stone towers, some over several hundred years old, were historically used for defense, communication, and family prestige. Their mysterious origins and striking appearance make Danba very different from other Tibetan regions in China.

In the afternoon, arrive at Zhonglu Tibetan Village, located on a hillside above the valley at around 2,100 meters elevation.

Compared with the more commercialized villages nearby, Zhonglu still preserves a peaceful and authentic atmosphere. Traditional Tibetan houses with white walls and wooden balconies are scattered across the slopes, surrounded by walnut trees, farmland, and ancient watchtowers.

You can spend the afternoon walking slowly through the village lanes, visiting local family courtyards, or simply relaxing with mountain views.

In autumn, the village becomes especially beautiful when the trees turn golden and the valley is filled with warm evening light. Sunset here is often one of the quiet highlights of the entire journey, with soft light falling across the Tibetan houses and surrounding mountains.

Tonight, stay in a local-style guesthouse or boutique lodge in Zhonglu Village, where you can experience a more intimate side of Western Sichuan life far from the busy tourist routes.

Highlights

  • Scenic drive through Tibetan valleys
  • Traditional Tibetan architecture
  • Danba watchtowers and local culture
  • Quiet mountain village atmosphere

Tips

  • Sunset photography in Zhonglu is especially beautiful.
  • Respect local customs when visiting homes or temples.
  • Nights can become cold even in warmer seasons.
Western Sichuan Zhonglu Tibetan Village

The Experience:

After breakfast, we will leave Zhonglu Village and continue across the highland landscapes of Western Sichuan. Today’s route covers about 180–200 km and usually takes 6–7 hours, including sightseeing stops along the way.

Your first stop is Suopo Tibetan Village, one of the best places in Danba to see the region’s famous ancient stone watchtowers.

Rising beside traditional Tibetan homes and farmland, these towers create a unique landscape found almost nowhere else in China. The peaceful valley scenery here feels very different from the high mountains of previous days.

Continue driving toward the sacred Yala Snow Mountain area (~5,800 meters above sea level). Yala Snow Mountain is deeply respected in local Tibetan culture and often appears dramatically above forests, grasslands, and prayer flags. On clear days, the pyramid-shaped summit becomes one of the visual highlights of the journey.

Later, visit Moshi Park, famous for its rare black stone formations created by geological movement over thousands of years. The dark rocky landscape, surrounded by snow mountains and plateau scenery, gives the area an almost otherworldly feeling and is especially popular with photographers.

By late afternoon, arrive in Tagong (~3,700 meters above sea level). This small Tibetan town sits beside vast grasslands with distant mountain views, white stupas, grazing yaks, and colorful prayer flags creating classic Western Sichuan scenery.

After checking into your hotel, you can enjoy a relaxed evening walk around the town and experience the calm atmosphere of the Tibetan plateau.

Highlights

  • Tibetan watchtower villages
  • Sacred Yala Snow Mountain views
  • Unique black stone landscapes at Moshi Park
  • First experience of Tagong Grassland

Tips

  • Weather can shift quickly on the plateau; bring rain protection.
  • Wide-angle lenses work especially well in Tagong and Moshi Park.
  • Altitude today is higher than previous nights for many travelers.
Tagong Grassland

The Experience:

This morning begins with a visit to Tagong Monastery, one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the region.

Built in traditional Tibetan style with golden rooftops, prayer halls, and rows of spinning prayer wheels, the monastery offers a peaceful glimpse into local spiritual life. Early mornings are especially atmospheric, with local Tibetans coming to pray while incense drifts through the mountain air.

Nearby, the wide-open landscapes of Tagong Grassland (~3,700 meters above sea level) stretch beneath distant snow mountains. This area is known for its classic plateau scenery: grazing yaks, Tibetan tents, white stupas, and colorful prayer flags moving in the wind. On clear days, the sacred Yala Snow Mountain appears beautifully in the distance.

Later, we will continue driving through Xinduqiao, often called a “photographer’s paradise.” It is widely known for its soft natural light, Tibetan villages, forests, rivers, and open valley landscapes.

The scenery here changes gently throughout the seasons, with green meadows in summer and golden trees in autumn making it especially popular for photography.

Continue driving, we will cross Zheduo Mountain at around 4,298 meters in elevation. It is one of the symbolic mountain passes between the Tibetan plateau and the Sichuan basin. From the top, you can enjoy wide panoramic views over the surrounding mountains before descending toward Kangding.

We will arrive in Kangding in the late afternoon or evening. Compared with the quiet grasslands of Tagong, Kangding feels more lively and energetic, blending Tibetan and Han Chinese culture along the mountain river valley.

After checking into your hotel, you can relax and enjoy your final night in Western Sichuan.

Highlights

  • Tibetan monastery experience
  • Grassland scenery and snow mountain views
  • Xinduqiao photography landscapes
  • Scenic crossing of Zheduo Mountain Pass

Tips

  • Morning light in Tagong is ideal for photography.
  • Strong winds are common near mountain passes.
  • Keep some snacks and water for long scenic driving sections.
Tagong Grassland

The Experience:

After breakfast, we will drive around 30 km from Kangding to Mugecuo Scenic Area (~3,500–3,800 meters above sea level), one of the most beautiful alpine lake areas in Western Sichuan. Often called the “Little Jiuzhai Valley” of Western Sichuan, Mugecuo is known for its mountain lakes, forests, meadows, hot springs, and seasonal colors.

Inside the scenic area, you’ll take a sightseeing bus through different alpine landscapes.

One of the first stops is Fangcao Plateau, where open grasslands, wildflowers, forests, and grazing horses create a peaceful highland atmosphere during warmer seasons.

Continue to Seven Color Lake, one of the highlights of Mugecuo. Surrounded by forest and mountain scenery, the lake changes color under different sunlight and weather conditions, creating reflections of blue, green, yellow, and turquoise tones across the water.

Next, visit Azalea Gorge, an area filled with forests, streams, meadows, and natural hot spring landscapes. In spring and early summer, wild rhododendrons bloom across the mountainsides, while clear days also offer distant views of Yala Snow Mountain and Lotus Snow Mountain.

Finally, arrive at Mugecuo Lake (~3,700 meters above sea level). This peaceful alpine lake reflects the surrounding snow mountains, forests, and changing sky colors, making it one of the most relaxing stops of the journey.

After exploring Mugecuo, we will begin the return drive to Chengdu. The journey back usually takes around 5–6 hours, with the scenery gradually transitioning from plateau mountains back to the Sichuan basin.

We will arrive in Chengdu in the evening. The driver will drop you off at your hotel. It marks the end of your Western Sichuan adventure.

Highlights

  • Alpine lakes and forests
  • Relaxed nature walking
  • Beautiful seasonal scenery

Tips

  • Start early for a more relaxed return journey.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for Mugecuo trails.
  • Expect cooler temperatures around the lakes even in summer.

Western Sichuan completely exceeded our expectations. The scenery changed every single day. Mount Siguniang was definitely the highlight for us, though we only hiked a small section of changpinggou valley.

Our Tibetan driver, Tenzin, was fantastic throughout the whole trip. He was calm and experienced on the mountain roads. He always knew the best places for photos and local food stops.
