The Experience:

Today, we dive deeper into the food culture that has made Chengdu famous throughout China.

After breakfast, we’ll drive to the Sichuan Cuisine Museum, where we’ll learn how Sichuan cooking developed over centuries through trade, migration, and local ingredients. Rather than simply observing, you’ll join a hands-on cooking class and prepare several classic dishes under the guidance of local chefs.

The best part comes afterward when we sit down to enjoy the meal we’ve created together.

In the afternoon, we slow the pace at a traditional teahouse, one of the most important social spaces in Chengdu. With a cup of jasmine tea in hand, you’ll watch locals chatting, playing mahjong, and enjoying a lifestyle that has changed little for generations.

As evening arrives, we gather around a bubbling Sichuan hotpot, one of the region’s most iconic dining experiences. After dinner, we’ll take a leisurely walk through Kuanzhai Alley, where restored Qing-era courtyards, lantern-lit lanes, and modern cafés blend old and new Chengdu in a uniquely local way.

Highlights

  • Hands-on Sichuan cooking class
  • Traditional Chengdu teahouse experience
  • Authentic Sichuan hotpot dinner

Tips

  • Bring an appetite. You’ll be eating throughout the day
  • Let us know about dietary requirements in advance
  • Kuanzhai Alley is particularly atmospheric after dark

The Experience:

After breakfast, we’ll drive to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, one of the world’s best places to observe these remarkable animals. We will arrive there before 09:00 AM, because giant pandas are most active during their breakfast time. Walking through bamboo-filled enclosures, you’ll watch pandas eating, climbing, and playing while learning about conservation efforts that have helped protect the species.

For lunch, we’ll introduce you to a different side of Chengdu’s food scene at a local “fly restaurant.” Despite their simple appearance, these small neighborhood eateries are often where residents go for some of the city’s most authentic flavors. It’s a great opportunity to try beloved dishes such as mapo tofu, twice-cooked pork, and seasonal specialties.

In the afternoon, we travel by private vehicle to Leshan, a journey of approximately two hours through the Sichuan countryside.

After checking into our hotel, we’ll explore the local food scene, which differs noticeably from Chengdu’s cuisine. Leshan is known for flavorful noodle dishes, tofu pudding, and its own style of street food, offering another perspective on Sichuan’s rich culinary traditions.

Highlights

  • Visit China’s most famous panda conservation center
  • Enjoy lunch at a genuine local fly restaurant
  • Discover Leshan’s unique regional food culture

Tips

  • Early departure means more active pandas
  • Keep your camera ready for red panda sightings
  • Leshan cuisine is often less spicy than Chengdu’s

The Experience:

This morning, we will visit one of China’s most extraordinary cultural landmarks: the Leshan Giant Buddha.

Carved directly into a riverside cliff during the Tang Dynasty, the statue stands 71 meters tall and remains the largest ancient stone Buddha in the world.

We can either explore the scenic area on foot for a close look at the giant statue or on a boat for a panoramic view.

As we walk through the site, we’ll share the fascinating story behind its construction. The Buddha was created by monks who hoped to calm the dangerous river currents where three rivers meet, helping protect passing boats and traders. More than 1,200 years later, it remains a powerful symbol of faith, perseverance, and craftsmanship.

After visiting the Buddha, we begin our return journey to Chengdu by private vehicle.

Depending on your flight schedule, we can transfer directly to the airport or railway station, bringing this short but memorable Sichuan journey to a comfortable conclusion.

Highlights

  • Explore the UNESCO-listed Leshan Giant Buddha
  • Learn the remarkable story behind its construction
  • Scenic views over the confluence of three rivers

Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes for the stairways and walking paths
  • Morning visits usually offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds
  • Allow extra travel time if departing during holiday periods
