The Experience

We'll start the day at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, one of China's best-known places to see giant pandas. The base also supports panda breeding, research and conservation, giving you some insight into the work behind protecting this much-loved species.

After the visit, we will return to the city and transfer to People's Park. You may see locals playing mahjong, dancing, practicing tai chi or chatting over tea. We can stop at a traditional teahouse and experience this everyday side of Chengdu rather than simply passing through.

Later, enjoy a Sichuan opera performance. You may see a combination of singing, instrumental music, comic storytelling and the famous face-changing performance.

Highlights

  • Observe giant pandas in the morning
  • Experience local leisure culture at People's Park
  • Watch the colorful traditions of Sichuan opera

Day 5:
Chengdu → Leshan Giant Buddha → Local Food → Mount Emei

The Experience

After breakfast, we'll leave Chengdu for Leshan by private vehicle. It takes around two hours.

Here, you'll visit the Leshan Giant Buddha, an enormous stone statue carved into a cliff at the meeting point of the Min, Dadu and Qingyi rivers. Completed during the Tang Dynasty, the Buddha was built in the hope of calming the dangerous currents and protecting river travelers. Standing about 71 metres tall, it is an impressive sight.

There are two ways to visit the site. You can explore the Buddha on foot, following paths and stairways that offer close-up views of the statue, or take a boat trip for a view of the entire Buddha from the river, subject to availability.

Leshan is also known for its local food, so we'll make time to try regional specialties.

Then, we'll continue to Mount Emei. We'll check in at the foot of the mountain for tomorrow's visit.

Highlights

  • Visit the UNESCO-listed Leshan Giant Buddha
  • Taste local Leshan specialties

Tips

  • Leshan can be busy, and the cliffside steps may involve queues and steep sections.

Day 6:
Mount Emei → Chengdu

The Experience

After breakfast, we start climbing Mount Emei. To save your energy, you can take the mountain sightseeing bus to the upper cable car station, then ride the cable car to the Golden Summit.

We will have time to visit the famous Golden Summit and watch the impressive Samantabhadra statue, known in Chinese as the Four-Faced Buddha. On a clear day, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. If the weather is favourable, you may also see a spectacular sea of clouds rolling across the peaks. In winter, the summit can be especially beautiful with snow.

After exploring the summit, take the cable car and sightseeing bus back down the mountain. Your driver will then transfer you to Chengdu.

Highlights

  • Visit the Golden Summit and see the iconic Samantabhadra statue
  • Enjoy panoramic mountain views and, weather permitting, a sea of clouds

Tips

  • The peak area is often much colder than the city, so bring warm layers, especially in winter.
  • Mountain transport and summit visibility depend on weather and operating conditions.

The Experience

After breakfast, drive to the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in Menglun, about 1.5 hours from Jinghong. This is one of China's richest botanical gardens, with thousands of tropical plant species spread across themed gardens and a large area of rainforest. Rather than trying to see everything, we'll focus on some of its most distinctive collections.

In Palm Garden, you'll see tall palms create a classic tropical landscape. In the Plant Collection, you may see the dancing plant and the miracle fruit. It's a good place to discover how surprising plants can be.

The highlight is the giant water lilies. Their enormous round leaves are particularly impressive. You can even experience sitting on top.

After the botanical garden, return to Jinghong and visit Manting Park, a former royal garden of the Dai kings. Continue to Zongfosi Temple to explore one of the city's important Buddhist sites and learn more about Theravada Buddhist traditions in Dai communities.

Highlights

  • Learn how tropical plants are used in local food, medicine and daily life
  • Discover Dai cultural heritage at Manting Park and Zongfosi Temple

Tips

  • The botanical garden is large, so use the sightseeing bus to save time and energy.

We'll approach the visit as a wildlife and habitat experience rather than promising a close encounter. Follow the park's rules, keep a safe distance from wildlife and never attempt to feed or approach an elephant.

Later, continue to Manzhang Dai Village to learn about traditional Dai village life.

We'll return to your hotel after the visit.

Highlights

  • Learn about Asian elephant conservation in a tropical forest setting
  • Discover traditional Dai architecture and village culture

Day 11:
Guangzhou City Tour

The Experience

We'll begin at Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, which was built in the late Qing Dynasty.

The complex is known for its intricate wood carvings, ceramic roof decorations, stonework and courtyards, which are a fine example of traditional Lingnan architecture.

Next, visit Sacred Heart Cathedral, a striking Gothic-style Catholic church built in the nineteenth century. Its stone façade and tall towers look quite different from the traditional Chinese architecture of the morning, reflecting Guangzhou's long history of overseas trade and cultural exchange.

We'll make time to explore the local food scene for lunch, perhaps trying Cantonese dim sum, roast meats or other regional specialties.

Later, head to Canton Tower, where the observation platform at around 450 meters offers sweeping views over the city, subject to visibility and ticket availability.

In the evening, board a Pearl River night cruise. From the water, you'll see Guangzhou's illuminated skyline, bridges and waterfront landmarks.

It's a comfortable way to end the day and enjoy the contrast between the city's historic neighborhoods and modern architecture.

Highlights

  • See Lingnan craftsmanship at Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
  • See Guangzhou from Canton Tower's high observation platform
  • Enjoy the illuminated skyline on a Pearl River cruise

Tips

  • Observation platform access and cruise schedules should be checked ahead of time.
  • Bring a light layer for the river cruise, especially on breezy evenings.

Day 12:
Guangzhou → Foshan → Guangzhou

The Experience

Today we'll take a private vehicle to Foshan, a historic city in the Pearl River Delta.

Foshan has a strong reputation for traditional crafts, martial arts and Cantonese culture. Our main visit is Foshan Zumiao Temple, a historic temple complex dedicated to the Northern Emperor and closely associated with the city's local heritage.

Then, we'll watch a traditional martial arts performance and a lion dance, both important parts of festive and community life in southern China.

Foshan is also known for its food, so we'll make time to try local specialties during the day. You may find dishes and snacks that differ from those in Guangzhou, even though both cities share a Cantonese culinary tradition.

After the visit, we'll return to Guangzhou.

Highlights

  • Explore Foshan Zumiao Temple and its traditional architecture
  • Watch martial arts and lion-dance performances, subject to the schedule
  • Taste Foshan's distinctive local dishes

Day 13:
Guangzhou → Hong Kong by High-Speed Train

The Experience

After breakfast, we'll transfer you to the railway station for your high-speed train to Hong Kong.

After arriving in Hong Kong, your driver will transfer you to your hotel.

Today is intentionally free to explore. Hong Kong offers a wide range of shopping experiences, from large malls and international brands to street markets and small specialty shops. Besides, you can also revisit the places you like.

If you haven't had enough of the local food, you could use today to try a dim sum restaurant, enjoy Hong Kong-style milk tea or look for a final bowl of wonton noodles.

We'll keep the schedule open rather than adding another long sightseeing route. That flexibility is particularly useful for families and travelers who want time to shop or pack before departure.

Highlights

  • Enjoy flexible time for shopping, food and favorite places

Tips

  • Carry your passport for the train journey and immigration procedures.

FAQ

Is this China itinerary suitable for winter travel?

Yes. It combines major southern Chinese cities with tropical Xishuangbanna, making it a good option for travelers who want to avoid spending their entire winter holiday in cold regions. However, Chengdu and Mount Emei can still be cold, and mountain weather may affect sightseeing.

Is Xishuangbanna warm in December and January?

Yes. Xishuangbanna is generally one of China's warmer winter destinations, with pleasant daytime temperatures and relatively dry weather. Evenings can be cooler, so a light jacket is useful. Actual conditions vary by date and location.

What food should I try in Chengdu, Xishuangbanna and Guangzhou?

In Chengdu, look for Sichuan hot pot, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and local snacks. Xishuangbanna offers Dai-style grilled dishes, herbs and distinctive sour and spicy flavors. In Guangzhou, try Cantonese dim sum, roast meats, wonton noodles and traditional desserts. We can tailor food stops to your preferences.

Is Mount Emei worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you are interested in Buddhist heritage, mountain scenery and temples. Winter can bring beautiful snow-covered landscapes, but it can also mean cold conditions, ice, reduced visibility or transport disruptions. The sightseeing plan should be adjusted to the weather and your preferred activity level.

Can I customize this tour?

Absolutely. QuietRoutes offers 100% tailor-made private tours. We can adjust the destinations, hotel categories, sightseeing pace, food experiences, guide arrangements and transportation to match your interests, travel dates and budget.

Does this tour include private guides and vehicles?

We can arrange private vehicles, drivers and English-speaking local guides for the scheduled sightseeing days. The exact guide coverage and vehicle arrangements depend on the final itinerary, so you can choose the level of assistance that suits you.
